Welcome to Summer Term in Year 1
We are excited for another fun-filled term of learning and exploration in year 1.
We will continue to strive to make your child’s experience in education special, continuing to develop their relationship with their teacher and other learning support assistants, who will support them and ensure that their emotional and academic needs are met daily. Our aim is for your children to become confident learners and to carry their love of learning throughout their lives.
Summer Bookshelf

During Summer term in Year 1, we will read a variety of inspirational texts where we will explore the character traits of kindness, citizenship, integrity, curiosity, bravery, and gratitude.

The inspirational texts on our summer bookshelf will inspire our learning across the curriculum. We will consider Beegu’s first impression of planet earth and explore the similarities and differences of life in outer space and planet earth using the book ‘The Darkest Dark’. We will delve into the enchanted world of fairytales through ‘Little Red Reading Hood’, a twist on the traditional tale loved by many.
We will be extending our learning in maths focusing on numbers to 100, multiplication and division, fractions, position and direction, money & time.
In geography, we will be researching different environments and settlements all over the world such as polar regions, rainforests, desert etc.
In science we will learn about the parts of plants as well as seasonal changes. We will also recap our learning on animal and will use our bookshelf text ‘Birds’ to create a report on birds practising using capital letters, finger spaces, full stops and much more.
In history, we will be learning about British female monarchs focusing on Queen Elizabeth I, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II.
In RE we will continue to develop our knowledge on the teachings and beliefs of a range of different religions and look at how this is represented in society across Great Britain. We will talk about what it means to belong to a faith community.
In PE, we will be exploring dance, athletics, yoga and object control.
In music, we will be matching and creating pictures/symbols to represent sound before moving on to capturing, sequencing and changing sounds to make a musical story.
In art, we will be focusing on the artist Jackson Pollock exploring colour, texture and pattern.
In D&T, we will create free standing structures designing equipment for the playground.
In PSHE, we will focus on health and well-being as well as growing and changing.
