Year 2

Welcome to Autumn Term in Year 2

The inspirational texts on our Autumn Bookshelf will inspire learning across the curriculum. The books chosen highlight the importance of integrity and kindness, encouraging our children to act with honesty and empathy in every situation. They also illustrate the strength that comes from citizenship, both in standing up for what’s right and in fostering a sense of community. Through tales of courage and gratitude, these books remind us that even the smallest acts can spark meaningful change, and that by embracing these values, we all have the potential to make a difference.

Our aim is for your children to become confident learners and to carry their love of learning throughout their lives.

Autumn Bookshelf

Grandad’s Island (fiction): a heartwarming story about a boy called Syd who goes on a magical adventure with his grandad.

Billy and the Beast (fiction): a fun and exciting story about a brave boy called Billy who helps a friendly beast and teaches us the importance of kindness, courage, and friendship.

Fanatically Great Women Who Made History (non-fiction): an inspiring book that introduces children to remarkable women who changed the world through their courage, determination, and amazing achievements.

James and the Giant Peach (fiction): a magical adventure story about a boy called James who travels inside a giant peach with some unusual insect friends and discovers the power of friendship, bravery, and believing in himself.

Autumn Learning at a Glance

Maths

We will focus on developing our understanding of place value and using this knowledge to compare, order and represent numbers. We will also build confidence in addition and subtraction, applying a range of strategies to solve calculations and reasoning problems. Later, we will explore 2D and 3D shapes, learning to identify and describe their properties and compare different shapes.

English

We will continue to develop our sentence writing skills, including the use of expanded noun phrases to make our writing more detailed and engaging. We will write for a range of purposes, including character descriptions, poetry, narrative re-tells and diary entries to entertain our readers. We will also learn how to write to inform by creating non-chronological reports and instructions, helping us to organise information clearly and effectively.

Science

Our Science will focus on animals’ needs for survival and exploring different materials.

History

We will be exploring people who changed the world.

Geography

We will be exploring what the Earth’s continents and oceans are.

Computing

The children will be looking at the technology around us.

Art

We will focus on developing our drawing and painting skills while exploring the formal elements of line, shape and colour. We will study the work of the artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, learning about his unique style and creative use of pattern and colour. Through this, we will be introduced to the Modernist art movement and create our own artwork inspired by his ideas.

Design and Technology

Textiles – we will design, sew and evaluate a glove puppet.

PE

We will focus on developing our gymnastics skills through spinning, turning and twisting, helping us to improve our balance, control and coordination. We will also build our games skills through net and wall activities, learning how to send and receive objects accurately, work as a team and apply tactics in different games.
