Year 2

Welcome to Summer Term in Year 2

The inspirational texts on our Summer bookshelf will inspire learning across the curriculum. The books chosen highlight the importance of integrity and kindness, encouraging our children to act with honesty and empathy in every situation. They also illustrate the strength that comes from citizenship, both in standing up for what’s right and in fostering a sense of community. Through tales of courage and gratitude, these books remind us that even the smallest acts of goodness can spark meaningful change, and that by embracing these values, we all have the potential to make a difference.

Our aim is for your children to become confident learners and to carry their love of learning throughout their lives.

Summer Bookshelf

Little Red (Fairy tale): This Little Red Riding Hood is not easily fooled. The big bad wolf better watch his back! An interesting twist on a classic tale.

The Grotlyn (mystery/suspense): A stunningly illustrated picture book full of mystery and suspense!

Look up (Fiction): Rocket is a little girl who is fascinated by the universe! She wants to be an astronaut. She longs to emulate Mae Jemison, the first African American woman in space.

My name is not refugee (Fiction): A little boy travels with his mother from their home in a war-torn country to a safe heaven far away.

Summer Learning

Maths

We will focus on developing our understanding of fractions, measurement and time. We will also continue to revisit strategies for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and practise these through arithmetic and problem-solving questions.

English

We will continue to develop our story writing skills by writing elaborate narratives and recounting events, as well as ensuring we use extended noun phrases and adverbials of time in our writing. We will continue to practise writing from different point of view, for example writing diary entries and non-chronological reports. Near the end of the summer term, we will be exploring poetry and descriptions.

Science

Our Science will focus on ‘Bulbs and Seeds’ and ‘Growing Up’ where we will be exploring the life cycles of different animal groups.

History

We will be delving into the Victorian era by answering the enquiry question – What does the Great Exhibition tell us about life in Victorian England and the British Empire?

Geography

The children will consider human and physical processes, natural landscapes and human land use by answering the enquiry question: How are places on different continents similar and different?

Computing

We will be learning all about digital music and programming quizzes.

Art

The children will develop their drawing and printing skills. They will learn about line, shape, pattern and colour through the focus artist and designer William Morris.

Design and Technology

Food preparation – Preparing fruit and vegetables by making a salad.

PE

Gymnastics, striking and fielding games, athletics and dance.
